AFFIRMATIONS 101 - How to Write Affirmations that ACTUALLY WORK!


Well first off, what IS an affirmation, really?

An affirmation is defined as “a statement to be true”

Affirmations work by reprogramming the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is filled with societal programming and other stuff that we’ve picked up along the way of growing up, and these rules how we live our lives and interpret our experiences.

When you affirm something that you want to be true for yourself, you begin to reprogram your mind.

You are not necessarily faking it til you make it, but rather declaring and putting out into the universe faith in the possibility of who you want to become.

This is not simply a psychological idea, but it is also neuroscience.

There is a part of the brain that is always working to find evidence supporting the beliefs and goals you create. So when you put out an affirmation, your brain will begin to look for supporting evidence that it is true, and will try to figure out ways for you to achieve what you want.

Beliefs are simply thoughts that you repeatedly think. When you reframe your thoughts, you reframe your beliefs. And when you reframe your beliefs, you change the lens in which you see the world

Here are the ingredients for an effective and powerful affirmation:

  • it inspires rather than demotivates you
  • it is repeated for multiple days
  • the word that follows “I AM” is a noun (i.e. I am LOVE vs. I am loving)—not necessary but can make it more powerful
